September Word List 2016

Here we are again! Another month, another immense list of words. Per usual, I have to thank my favorite comic book series, Fables by Bill Willingham, for not only providing most of these words but also for expanding my vocabulary. Now onto the words.


belabor - to argue or elaborate in excessive detail
ambiguous - unclear, not physically, but conceptually 
theodicythe vindication of divine goodness and providence in view of the existence of evil.
emblematic - symbolic to a particular quality or concept
sodemy - generally anal or oral sex between people or sexual activity between a person and a non-human animal 

extortion - the practice of obtaining something, especially money, through force or threats.
insomnia - inability to sleep
juxtapose - place or deal with close together for contrasting effect.
deployment - to send troops into duty
virulent - extremely severe or harmful; bitterly hostile
botulism - food poisoning caused by a bacterium (botulinum) growing on improperly sterilized canned meats and other preserved foods.
pestilence - a fatal epidemic plague
incursion - an invasion or attack, especially sudden and brief

tularemia - a severe infectious bacterial disease of animals transmissible to humans, characterized by ulcers at the site of infection, fever, and loss of weight.
exfiltration - to withdraw troops, especially from a dangerous situation
ensorcelled - to enchant or fascinate
detain - keep (someone) in official custody, typically for questioning about a crime or in politically sensitive situations. 
preliminary - an action or event preceding or preparing for something fuller or more important.
heinous - utterly wicked
divest - to deprive someone of power, rights or professions
homunculus - a very small human or humanoid creature.

municipal - of or relating to a city or town or its governing body.
morality - principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.
truancy - he action of staying away from school without good reason
sedusive - a cool way to say seductive
culmination -the highest or climactic point of something, especially after a  long time
aquisition - an asset or object bought or obtained
incessant - continuing without pause or interruption, usually of something unpleasant
ocarina - a small egg-shaped wind instrument with a mouthpiece and holes for the fingers.

slumlord - a landlord of slum property, especially someone who profits well.
eponymous - (of a person) giving their name to something.

hedonistic - engaged in the pursuit of pleasure; sensually self-indulgent.
caricature - a picture, description, or imitation of a person or thing in which certain striking characteristics are exaggerated in order to create a comic or grotesque effect.
valar morghulus - a Braavosi greeting said in High Valyrian, which literally translates to "All men must die" in the Common Tongue.
alcopop - a term describing certain flavored alcoholic beverages with relatively low alcohol content entrails - a person or animal's intestines or internal organs, especially when removed or exposed.
excursions - a short journey or trip, usually for leisure
caustic - sarcastic in a scathing and bitter way
mirth - amusement expressed in laughter
gormandized - to indulge in good eating; eat greedily.
sadity - high-class, snooty.
alleviate - make (suffering, deficiency, or a problem) less severe.
decadent - a person who is luxuriously self-indulgent.
disdain - he feeling that someone or something is unworthy of one's consideration or respect
dubious - hesitating or doubting.
dungarees - blue denim
mundane - lacking interest or excitement; dull.
inhibition - a feeling that makes one self-conscious and unable to act in a relaxed and natural way.
assimilate - take in (information, ideas, or culture) and understand fully.
multitudinous - very numerous.
plethora - a large or excessive amount
subsequently - after a particular thing has happened; afterward
esoteric - intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest.
chifforobe - a piece of furniture with drawers on one side and hanging space on the other.
seminary - a college that prepares students to be priests, ministers, or rabbis
colicky - a frustrating condition marked by predictable periods of significant distress in an otherwise well-fed, healthy baby. Babies with colic often cry more than three hours a day, three days a week for three weeks or longer
antipathy - a deep-seated feeling of dislike
futility - pointlessness or uselessness.
impetus - the force or energy with which a body moves.
despondent - in low spirits from loss of hope or courage.
stupefied - make (someone) unable to think or feel properly.
mentholatum - A magic ointment to be applied liberally to the nose and nostril area while one is sick
palsied - affected with paralysis and involuntary tremors.
dichotomy - a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different.
the colic - severe, often fluctuating pain in the abdomen caused by intestinal gas or obstruction in the intestines and suffered especially by babies.

peau de soie - a smooth, finely ribbed satin fabric of silk or rayon.
duplicitous - deceitful.
defeaning - so loud as to make it impossible to hear anything else.
ostentatious - characterized by vulgar or pretentious display; designed to impress or attract notice; showy
degustionary -  the action or an instance of tasting especially in a series of small portions.
insipid - lacking flavor
deplorable - shockingly bad in quality
deacon - an ordained minister of an order ranking below that of priest.
percolator - a machine for making coffee
semiotic - the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation
solposistic - he view or theory that the self is all that can be known to exist.
ostracism - exclusion from a society or group.
vertiginous - causing vertigo, especially by being extremely high or steep
vesuvius 
undaunted - a volcano in southern Italy
zephyr - a soft gentle breeze.
vex - make someone feel annoyed, frustrated, or worried, usually with trivial matters.
egregious - outstandingly bad
fissures - a long, narrow opening or line of breakage made by cracking or splitting, usually in rock or earth
bereft - deprived of or lacking something, especially a nonmaterial asset.
convalescing - recover one's health and strength over a period of time after an illness or operation
agrarian - relating to cultivated land or the cultivation of land; a person who advocates a redistribution of landed property, especially as part of a social movement.
vindication - to clear (someone) of blame or suspicion
odious - extremely unpleasant or repulsive
aversion - a strong dislike
vertigo - a sensation of whirling and loss of balance, associated particularly with looking down from a great height, or caused by disease affecting the inner ear or the vestibular nerve; giddiness.
disinclination - a reluctance or lack of enthusiasm.
opiate - a drug with morphinelike effects, derived from opium.
savant - a learned person, a scholar or intellectual
indentured - to bind someone as an apprentice or laborer
earnest - resulting from or showing sincere and intense conviction.
absolved - to set or declare (someone) free from blame, guilt, or responsibility.
amnesty - an official pardon for people who have been convicted of political offenses.
notary - a person authorized to perform certain legal formalities
rollicking - exuberantly lively and amusing, spirited.
depilatory - a cream or lotion for removing unwanted hair.
lofty - of imposing height.
incumbent - the holder of an office or post.
exuberantly - filled with or characterized by a lively energy and excitement.
