August Word List 2016

Tuesday, August 30, 2016

My word list for 2016! I hope these are helping my vocabulary because I honestly don't know. I don't want to sound ridiculously pretentious and overuse these words but I feel like if I don't use them I'll forget them soon after. You may notice there is like 4x the amount of words from the July list from last month and that is because I have been reading more recently! I finally started reading the comic book series 'Fables' by Bill Willingham (of course because of my love for The Wolf Among Us), and they have so many words that I have not heard of. I'm planning on finishing the whole series before my first term ends at the end of the year, and I'm also planning on collecting the volumes because I love them so much... Pick up a copy yourself! I'm going to cut off here, because the post would be too long if I didn't.

#BeyMAs 🍋🐝

Beyoncé's was by far the most important guest at the 2016 VMAs for about a million reasons. I live for her appearances on TV since she doesn't do as many lately, but she still delivers every time she attends shows like these.

1.) Red Carpet/Onstage Looks

On the red carpet, not only did she push the envelope with her couture outfit (as usual) she also brought her Lemonade entourage with her, which totally outshone Taylor Swift's model squad last year. Even little Blue Ivy was there, rocking an 11k dress tailored for her during the night. Beyoncé's dress costed over 12 million dollars, consisting of Swarovski diamonds and crystals.

2.) Awards

Beyoncé was nominated for 11 VMAs , including VOTY. By the end of the show she had 8 out of the eleven, including VOTY, and was announced as the most awarded person in VMAs history, surpassing Madonna. Even nearly 20 years into her career she is still breaking records, upholding her legend status. Every award Beyoncé receives she deserves, no argument there.

3.) Performance

The Lemonade Medley performance was INCREDIBLE. Not only did she perform all the songs with so much energy, but she also changed up the choreography and mashups than how they were on her tour. Beyoncé never recycles her old material, and always to do something fresh each time she comes out. Different song transitions, different effects and different costumes. Don't Hurt Yourself is my favorite song off the album, but the Formation dance breakdown was probably the best part of the performance by far.

From this post, I hope it's obvious now as to why Beyoncé is and always will be the most show stopping guest of any event. She is always the center of attention and for good reason. After her performance there were over 1 million tweets about Lemonade on twitter and the performance. This Queen has heavy impact. 🐝

Don't Let the Dragon Drag On

Sunday, August 14, 2016

Don’t let the dragon drag on. This is a quote from an episode of Adventure Time called ‘Davey’, and this line in particular has interested me for quite some time. (And frankly, I learn a lot more about life from Adventure Time than I do from other experiences). This is sort of spoilers for the episode so beware.

In the episode, Finn creates a secret identity for himself, different from his heroic appearance so that people won’t always bombard him with hanging out or admiring his duties. His normal persona he creates is used to disguise himself and act normal in public. Of course Finn takes an easy liking to this new character he made, named Davey, and he pretends to be him almost 24/7. This is when Jake reminds Finn "Don’t let the dragon drag on". The way I interpreted this was that Jake was telling Finn, not to let this alter ego Finn created distract or make him neglect who he really is.

This quote to me was really important because it can be really easy for anyone to pretend to be something they’re not. When you’re trying to impress someone, trying to benefit or better yourself, or even just try to make yourself more interesting, you may put on a mask or costume to pretend to be something else. In a situation where you want to impress someone, you may act a certain way, or say certain things, just to please that person and get them to like you. This can succeed in impressing the person, but it may turn out that they did not become impressed with who you are, but instead with the false persona you created. Losing yourself and who you are can be a dangerous thing. If you keep constantly trying to change yourself or try to be something else it could make you feel bad about yourself or inferior to what you’re trying to be. This is why a mentality of trying to be something you’re not is bad, even if the intentions are good. Don’t let the dragon drag on.

At the end of the episode Finn returns to his normal self and realizes being himself is the best thing he can be. Yay! Which is true of course for all of us. :)

It is claimed so often, for the good of humanity,
In a world so abundant with vanity,
With style, with image, with possession,
It seems to me, humanity has become self obsession,
As the need of a few, outweighs the need of many,
In the few humanity, I cannot see any,
And the claims, so often witnessed,
Are usually more associated with business,
Charities, aid agencies, all come at a cost,
The humanity donated, often is lost,
We need to take a second look at what we see,
Before we call it humanity

This poem was written by a street art gentleman I saw in Trafalgar Square in London. He wrote many series of poems regarding different topics but this one was my favorite because of how true it was.

Almost everywhere today, people are selfish, vain and are only concerned for themselves. In the line ‘the need of a few outweighs the need of many’, it’s talking about how people in first world countries, their ‘needs’ become more important to those who may be in a second or third world country. Like military funding in the U.S. that has an immense budget, which that money could be used to give food to those in need countries.

‘Charities, aid agencies, all come at a cost. The humanity donated often lost’. Every so often you see commercials on T.V. or a trend on social media that shows a poor village with starving or sad kids. Other times they show families that were ripped apart by war or a life threatening disease. Some charities more than other’s scam the general public into donating to their funds, but then they either keep the money for themselves or using in another way. Examples of these charities would be Cancer Fund of America, Kids Wish Network, and National Veterans Service Fund.

I am not saying all charities are scams, but for organizations that promise to be helpful and do it’s job to the service of humanity, it’s important to be careful when donating your money. The last charity I donated to was to Trekstock, a UK charity for Young Adult Cancer Support in 2015. I donated $15 which may seem small, but I believe that any amount counts.

Humanity is becoming more and more desensitized and I think it’s extremely important to always stay selfless and be aware when we try to help those in need. God made Man, Man made Money, and Money made Poor.

Lack in humanity can also be found in other ways, not just in second and third world countries. In America, there has been a problem with police brutality against black people, causing a nationwide protest against the killing of the specific race. The trend #BlackLivesMatter is used to not only spread awareness on the matter, but also to show support for the movement.

Many people however undermind this protest however, by saying #AllLivesMatter or #BlueLivesMatter. The movement made by a whole racial group to ask people/authority to stop killing them becomes underminded by people who think they are either exaggerating or playing victim.

Humanity is being lost everywhere, and it is important to try to keep it alive everyday. :)
