July Word List 2016

Recently, I have made it my duty to write down wordsthat I don't know, so that I can look them up later. I figured this could help my vocabulary and pretend I'm smarter than everyone else :). These are the list of words I have collected throughout the month of July this year. Hopefully I can make this a monthly thing, because I think it can be really good for me.


debilitating - to make weak or infirm
moot - a subject to debate or dispute
albeit - ‘although’
stoic - someone who can endure pain
belligerently - warlike/aggressive
unearthed - to discover something lost by searching/investigation
melancholic - gloomy state of mind, mournful and depressive
resilience - ability to spring back to shape
disenfranchised - to deprive (someone) of power/rights/privilege
subservient - prepared to obey unquestioningly 
invasive - to introduce thoughts or privacy
indulge - to allow oneself to enjoy an activity that is dissaproved
coax - to persuade someone by flattery or manipulation
mediator - someone who tries to resolve an argument
emetophobia - phobia of vomitting
introspection - examination/ observation of mental/emotional process
constituent - being a part/component of a whole
concise - giving information clearly in a few words
usurping - to take power illegally or by force
monochromatic - using or containing only one color
chastity - refraining from extramarital or all sexual intercourse
ascetic - person who practices severe discipline 
zipporah - wife of Moses
allegorical - literature with a hidden meaning/moral or symbol
berate - scold or criticize angrily
adamant - refusing to be persuaded
resuscitated - to revive from unconciousness or death
dowdy - unfashionable/ without style, typically women and their clothes
snit - a fit of irritation
vicissitude - change of circumstances of fortune that is unpleasant
pugnacious - inclined or eager to fight, also bellicose
archaic - characteristics of earlier period/antiquated
pensive - dreamily or wistfully thoughtful
philanthropy - the desire to promote the wellfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes, generosity
largesse - generosity in bestowing money or gifts upon others
altruistic - showing a disintrested and selfless concern for the well-being of others; unselfish
morbidcharacterized by or appealing to an abnormal and unhealthy interest in disturbing and unpleasant subjects, especially death and disease
fervorintense and passionate feeling.

arbitera person who settles a dispute or has ultimate authority in a matter
monotonous - dull, tedious, and repetitious; lacking in variety and interest.
pretense - an attempt to make something that is not the case appear true.
ornately - elaborately or sumptuously adorned, often excessively or showily so
ceasessly - constant and unending.
myriad - a countless or extremely great number.
nefarious - wicked or criminal activity/action
